Alessandro Verdi: Floating in Uncertainty Collateral event of the 53rd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia
The title of the show refers to the artist’s shifts in poetic register from the sarcastic to the tragic, from the pain of life to the yearning for the divine, from the sensuality of form to the spirituality of content. Alessandro Verdi’s painting is characterized by a strong and dynamic attraction between figural tautness and dissolution of the image, between well-defined naturalism and structural distortion, between spatial focus and a sudden loss of field of vision. His technique is at the same time sensual and refined and the sudden movements of the brush are reminiscent of the Japanese tradition of calligraphy; nevertheless the brutality of contents and the dramatic violence of the inner tension of each work create a paradoxical polarity that is typical of his art. In his works even the colors stress this tension: deep black, elegantly spread in the lightest glazing, alternates to dark grey, creating heaps of shadow and ravishing apparitions. The unfolding space in his paintings becomes a random field of fluid, multidirectional, unexpected apparitions. As Achille Bonito Oliva states: “Verdi’s research is aimed at preserve and fix traces of existence, beyond any cultural or social filters, any belief or geographical difference, spreading a fertile uncertainty that prevents him from single-handed positions and allows him to beam his powerful energy through the linguistic metaphors of painting”. The show has been made possible thanks to the intervention of some of Alessandro Verdi’s friends and collectors, gathered together by a common sense of mecenatism. A catalogue with an essay by Achille Bonito Oliva will be published on the occasion. Alessandro Verdi was born in Bergamo in 1960. He lives and works in Ambìvere (Bergamo).
